If you are into blogging or SEO world then certainly you might have heard about dofollow and nofollow links and their importance. But even then most of us really don`t get what actually these link mean to your site or blog. Lets start with its definition then moving forward you will know more..
WHAT ARE DOFOLLOW & NOFOLLOW LINKS?
Dofollow is a link attribute value given in HTML. Which tells search bots to dofollow this link and nofollow is also a HTML link attribute which tells search bots not to follow this link. But this is different that what search engines do when they find these links which I will explain later in this post.

That’s it! and the link appears in the same way as it appeared in the above example. If you don’t mention rel=”dofollow” then by default it is mentioned as dofollow.
What A bout Nofollow link?

In 2005 Matt cutt and Jason Shellen proposed a way to reduce spam commenting, and the way was “nofollow” attribute to comment links. This will ensure that blog/site link popularity is not lost.
HOW SEARCH ENGINE BOTS REACTS?
Google:
When it get dofollow link then it will distribute link popularity among all out going links(links from your blog to other blogs). And this will decrease your blog popularity.
When it founds nofollow link then it will not pass link credit to those out going links. But crawls that site.
Bing:
It will not count nofollow links in overall ranking calculation.
IS DOFOLLOW : NOFOLLOW RATIO IMPORTANT?
First thing strikes your mind is should I need to concentrate both on dofolow and nofollow links or only dofollow? Many SEO professionals and internet marketers say its better to get nofollow link also. Reason is, in natural backlinks we don`t except only dofollow links without nofolow it may arise spam.
Google’s Matt cutt said that we should not be narrow only on search engines, getting nofollow link can increase your popularity among the users. If some one sees your link on blog comment he might love your comment and he will hook with your blog if he loves your content.
CAN NOFOLLOW LINKS IMPROVE SERPS?
I would like to answer this in one word, NO! As I mentioned above how search bots behaves with nofollow links, which tells that it will not give you any link juice.
Jim Connolly(marketing expert with 25 years of experience) went with dofollow experiment and got to a conclusion that using dofollow link in your blog comment will decrease blog popularity.
After just 3 weeks with the dofollow attribute turned off, search traffic to his blog from Google has increased by over 25% (and it’s still increasing.) Jims Google Pagerank has also increased from 3 to 5
CONCLUSION
Give nofollow link to those pages to whom you don`t want to pass link juice or PR. And even in internal pages you can use nofollow link attribute only if you don`t want to pass any link juice.
For instance you have a website and you want to increase link popularity for main domain(only main domain) then mention internal pages on the main domain as nofollow. If you want to increase some internal pages also then mention them with dofollow. Hope you got what I mean!
